Gematria is an ancient system of assigning numerical values to words and phrases, originating from the Hebrew language which assigns a number to each of its letters. The numerical value can then be used to determine the symbolic significance of each word or phrase. This practice has been used in numerous cultures and times, with everything from Arab, Greek and Latin to Kabbalah, Jewish Mysticism and Neo-Paganism incorporating gematria in some form or another.
So what exactly is gematria? Gematria is a relatively simple system by which words are given numerical values and meanings. Each Hebrew letter has a numerical value between one and one thousand; the simplest values are assigned to single letters (i.e. Aleph=1) while more complex words require calculation (for example, a three letter word such as Mem plus Hey plus Shin would need to be multiplied by four since each word consists of four letters). These numbers can then be used for various purposes such as predicting the influence that a certain day might have on one's life or looking for hidden messages in written works.
At first glance, using gematria may seem like an intimidating task but luckily there are some simple formulas that can make it much easier. The first step in understanding gematria is learning how to calculate the numerical value of a given word or phrase. Start by adding together the numbers associated with each letter of your word (Aleph=1, Bet=2 etc). Once you have the sum total, you can divide this by two if it exceeds nine (Mem+Hey+Shin=487 which -> 487/2=243). You can further reduce your result by continuing to divide it until you get down to either a meaningful number or one that resonates with you personally for these purposes.
You can also use gematria for finding hidden meanings in written works such as books or bible passages; these numbers often correspond with certain themes that were not easily discernible beforehand, particularly when taken out of context. For example, finding numerical similarities between two passages could signify aspects of foreshadowing or large-scale themes while global trends could be determined by recognizing patterns in multiple works written centuries apart but using common themes within them such as good vs evil or life vs death etc.
